Bringing the Italian “Joy” to wine lovers of Thailand
A dream for wine lovers and wine enthusiasts is to visit Italy to experience wine and food at one of its most authentic sources. Due to the pandemic, that might not be an option right now but at least there’s good news for wine lovers in Thailand.
The Primitivo of Gioia del Colle, a well-known and internationally coveted wine, is gaining a much-deserved consensus worldwide within wine specialists, guides, and international fairs. The producer has a small and intimate production of 1-1.5 million bottles annually, serving a quality niche in Thailand as we see a steady increase of wine tasting sessions and masterclasses since July 2020 through a project funded by the European Union, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, and Puglia Region.
Yesterday, a promotional video presenting the features of this remarkable land was launched for the Thai market. The video shot in Gioia del Colle and directed by Luca Desiderato depicted a breathtaking journey through the region’s architectural and naturalistic beauties.
It so happens that the word ‘Gioia’ means ‘Joy’ in English. The director made sure that the video plays with this very concept throughout until the final epilogue, where the Thai entrepreneur, Ruenruedee Prachavaphruet, gave her testimonial. She’s the first to start importing the Primitivo Gioia del Colle DOC to Thailand in 2019.
Primitivo of Gioia del Colle is a Mediterranean full-bodied wine that’s very easy to enjoy. It is a black-skinned grape variety believed to be brought to Puglia by the Illyrians about 3,000 years ago, probably native to Dalmatia. The monk Francesco Filippo Indellicati (born 1767) was the first to identify the variety. He noticed some old vines in the countryside that matured before the others that seemed to have better adapted to the red soil in the area and decided to give the variety a Latin name of Primativus (First-ripe) later became Primitivo. He then selected many branches to plant in eight vineyards districts, creating the first monoculture of Primitivo grapes on record.
Puglia locates in the ‘heel’ region of southern Italy. It is also home to several beautiful historic towns. Some of these towns have thousands of years in history with diverse and breathtaking landscapes, beaches, a variety of food, and of course, wine.
Puglia region’s wine production thrived throughout the Roman period. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the winemaking methods were preserved as most of the vineyards cultivated monasteries- and abbeys-owned lands in those days.
During the reign of Emperor Frederic II, the production of wine resurged. In 1362, Queen Joanna I of Naples even proclaimed a law to protect all wine from Puglia and prohibited foreign wines’ introduction to the Kingdom.
Centuries later, Puglia wines’ reputation has been consolidated in a textbook named “Natural History of Wines,” compiled by Andrea Bacci, published in 1596, stating that the wines produced in the Bari area are of optimum quality.

เนื่องจากผู้ผลิตไวน์สามารถผลิตไวน์ได้ในจำนวนน้อย เพียงแค่ 1-1.5 ล้านขวดต่อปี แต่กลับได้รับการตอบรับอย่างดีเยี่ยมในประเทศไทยผ่านโครงการต่างๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นโครงการที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากสหภาพยุโรป กระทรวงการเกษตรประเทศอิตาลี และแคว้นปูเกลีย ประเทศอิตาลี
ล่าสุดได้มีการเปิดตัววีดีโอที่ได้รับถ่ายทำใน Gioia del Colle ซึ่งได้รับการกำกับโดย Luca Desiderato ในวิดีโอแสดงให้เห็นถึงเรื่องราวการบันทึกการเดินทางอันแสนน่าอัศจรรย์โดยแสดงให้เห็นถึงความสวยงามของภูมิภาคสถาปัตยกรรม และความงดงามสมบูรณ์ทางธรรมชาติของพื้นที่

Primitivo ของ Gioia del Colle เป็นไวน์เนื้อสัมผัสเข้มข้น แต่กลับดื่มง่าย ทำจากองุ่นดำสายพันธุ์ที่เชื่อว่ามีอายุกว่า 3,000 ปี มีต้นกำเนิดในราชอาณาจักรแดลเมเชีย ค้นพบโดยนักบวชฟรานเซสโก ฟิลิปโป อินเดลลิกาติ (Francesco Filippo Indellicati) และยังให้ชื่อว่า Primativus ซึ่งมีความหมายว่าสุกหรืองอมก่อน ต่อมา กลายมาเป็น Primitivo ในภาษาอิตาเลียน หลังจากนั้นนักบวชฟรานเซสโกได้ทำการเลือกเอากิ่งเหล่านี้มาเพื่อทำการปลูกในเขตวัดเหตุการณ์ในครั้งนั้นเป็นการปลูกองุ่นเชิงเดี่ยวครั้งแรกของสายพันธุ์ Primitivo
ภูมิภาคแคว้นปูเกลีย เป็นที่รู้จักเป็นอย่างดีในด้านการปลูกองุ่นและไวน์มาเป็นระยะเวลาเนิ่นนาน โดยทางแคว้นมีการอนุรักษ์ไว้ซึ่งวิธีการผลิตไวน์แบบดั้งเดิม ถึงแม้อาณาจักรโรมันจะล่มสลายลงก็ตาม นั่นก็เพราะไร่องุ่นส่วนใหญ่มักจะถูกปลูกในพื้นที่บริเวณวัดและโบสถ์
ต่อมาในรัชสมัยจักรพรรดิ เฟรเดริกที่ 2 การผลิตไวน์ได้รับความนิยมอีกครั้ง จนในที่สุดในปีค.ศ. 1362 พระราชินีโจอานาที่ 1 แห่งเนเปิลส์ทำการออกประกาศทางกฎหมายเพื่ออนุรักษ์ไวน์ทั้งหมดจากแคว้นปูเกลีย และประกาศการห้ามนำไวน์จากต่างประเทศเข้ามาในราชอาณาจักรอีกด้วย
หลายศตวรรษต่อมา แอนเดรีย บาชชี่ (Andrea Bacci) ได้รวบรวมไวน์จากแคว้นปูเกลียไว้ในหนังสือชื่อ “Natural History of Wines” ซึ่งได้รับการตีพิมพ์ในปีค.ศ. 1596 โดยระบุว่าไวน์ที่ผลิตในพื้นที่บารีนั้นถือว่าเป็นไวน์สายพันธุ์ที่มีคุณภาพที่ดีที่สุด
